Yale
It had been over an hour since Brie had gotten Lucas to bed, and she still hadn’t told me what was wrong. I knew something big had happened since the second she walked in that door and I had tried to get her to tell me, but she was locked up tighter than Fort Knox. I had given her space, but now that we were alone and had some quiet, she was going to talk.
“Don’t you dare,” she said with a glare that did all sorts of things down below as she padded into the living room. “I told you to knock off and go home. Why are you still here?”
“Cheesecake, what’s going on?”
“I told you earlier, and I’ll tell you again, nothing is going on. I’m fine. Butt out and go home, Yale.”
See, women like to say nothing’s wrong, everything is fine, but they’re liars. If a woman ever tells you they’re fine and you take her word for it, you need to just pack up and go home. If you’re a married man and you hear fine, you better spend an hour going down on your woman and come up with the best goddamn apology ever or your ass better head to the couch.
“Brie–”
“Fuck you, Yale! Go home.”
Now we were getting somewhere. I could work with anger. “I’m sorry—”
“If you fucking tell me you’re sorry for kissing me again or that you didn’t mean it, I will punch you in that pretty face of yours.”
And there was the heart of the issue. “You’ve got a sassy mouth on you tonight.”
It wasn’t the most brilliant thing I’d ever said, but looking at a hot and bothered Brie was making it so I couldn’t think straight.
“I don’t care what you have to say.”
“What did I do?”
Okay another tip of advice. Don’t ever ask this question unless you’re really ready for the answer. One of two things will happen when you ask a woman this. They will either say “nothing,” which is bullshit, or they will tell you every damn thing you’ve ever done wrong.
“You came back,” she whispered as her shoulders hunched.
“Excuse me?”
“You left and then you came back.”
I wasn’t sure what she was talking about. When I’d gotten the pissed off text from Brandon earlier, I’d gone to smooth things over, but I’d come right back.
“Where else would I go?” This woman would be the death of me. I’d been throwing off crazy mixed signals. I hadn’t had my head on straight around her since the moment she opened that door. If I were honest with myself, it’s been longer than that. I tried to tell Brandon that today, but he didn’t want to hear any of it. I had been hoping to give him time to recover before I hit him with the news I had it bad for his sister.
“I don’t know? It’s Friday night. Maybe go out with one of your many whores.”
That stung, but I deserved it. “I don’t want to be with them. They mean nothing to me.
